I have been a volunteer for Unspoken Smiles for almost a year now and it has been the most rewarding experience. I started off as a general volunteer providing oral hygiene instruction to school children. I was amazed by how much the children learned and absorbed. I have been fortunate enough to continue volunteering for this wonderful organization through the pandemic. Providing oral health instruction to children remotely has been of great importance during this time. Children without the routine of leaving their homes are less likely to continue oral hygiene and are more likely to snack on unhealthy foods. I am so happy I can take part in providing this education to children through this wonderful organization.

Hi, this is Tiffany. I am from Costa Rica and currently studying law. I remember at the beginning of my career, the main reason that made me start was the opportunity to help people with no economic resources and fight for their human rights.

Unspoken Smiles has partnered with our restaurant Pasta Pronto Express and Catering @pastapronto.cr in San Jose, Costa Rica on MANY volunteer missions including Turrialba, Guatuso and Sixaola during the 2021 floods which took us all across the country. The founder and visionary of Unspoken Smiles, Jeal Paul Laurent, has also contributed on MANY occasions to our Weekly Food Relief program #CaridadEnLaComunidad in Lomas de Pavas in San Jose, Costa Rica. I have personally been on these volunteer missions with Jean Paul Laurent, and stood by him as we drove 9+ hours per day over the course of several days to bring food, supplies and care to those in desperate need. I’ve been volunteering for this organization for a few weeks now and it has been an incredible experience. We get to inform, teach children about oral hygiene while making it entertaining for them. We have been teaching children not only from the USA but also children from Ecuador and doing it in Spanish and English. This organization is a global contributor to help achieve a better oral hygiene for children from anywhere in the world.
I have been volunteering for Unspoken Smiles for about one month. I love what Unspoken Smiles stands for and how they have been able to provide dental care and education to multiple communities worldwide. When families and individuals experience tough financial circumstances, preventive oral care, unfortunately, is often viewed as a luxury and it's worldwidely a known fact. This lapse frequently results in poor oral and other health outcomes, including pain and the need for more expensive care later on.
Historically in the U.S., dental health-care access has been limited by lack of dentists practicing in rural or inter-city areas. Patients also experience barriers due to limited education, economic resources, cultural beliefs, and health status disadvantages. Because of these barriers, some people suffer in pain or delay preventive care and treatment until the oral condition is severe and expensive to correct. When dental problems reach a crisis, some people seek dental care from hospital emergency rooms where health-care providers may temporarily alleviate pain but are not able to treat dental disease.
And that's where I got involved with the unspoken Smile foundation as I was serving as deputy mayor of a underserved U.S village when people are in such mentioned above needs working with JP and the staff of this local org was to most effective and impactful initiatives I have taken as mayor. Today my commitment with them is to help push legislation for more oral health care can be provided to underserved populations where they live, work, or play, resulting in improved oral health of the population at less or no cost nationwide. So far I have been with them for 5 years , it's a very dynamic crew and really oriented to make a difference in life of children and adults in underserved communities worldwide. At a young age, many American children receive a small toothbrush with extra soft bristles, and a small tube of toothpaste with a Sesame Street character on it.
They would say, 'use a small amount of toothpaste, the size of a pea,' and, 'brush in small little circles, go easy on your gums.'
It's such simple advice, yet we take it for granted, because even if you only brush once a week, you most likely are getting a professional cleaning twice a year.
Your teeth are fine; your gums are fine. Every day you eat what you want, chew your nails, and drink a lot of soda. But your teeth are fine.
But not everyone grows up here. Not every child is taught how to brush their teeth, or even given the tools to do so.
Dentists can be expensive or scarce. Because of that there is a high risk you can be infected with a disease that was 100% preventable.
The Unspoken Smiles Foundation believes that every child, in every country deserves to have the opportunity to have a healthy and full smile.

Last year, I received the amazing opportunity to become apart of Unspoken Smiles first as a volunteer, then became Chair of the Campus Chapters Committee. Without my involvement in this organization, I would never have known the extent to which oral cancer and tooth decay pervades globally and how so many continue to lack access to dental care. With Jean Paul and all of Unspoken Smiles' dedicated volunteers, we have been able to raise funds to bring proper education and access to dental care for children in need and instill knowledge and awareness of such a pertinent issue in the United States. Unspoken Smiles is a truly unique foundation in its focus on such a specific, yet critical issue that many nonprofits do not dedicate enough attention to. It has already achieved so much this past year and it will only continue to grow. I have recently joined this amazing organization as country representative and international consultant, We have delivered the school based program to 950 children in Kurdistan Regional Iraq, and we are currently planning to reach out to the refugee camps in Kurdistan, our plan is to reach 1000 children in the camps by January 2017.

Unspoken Smiles Foundation is committed to education and support of oral hygiene. The pilot program began in 2014 and was inspired by the immeasurable loss to Haiti following the earthquake in 2010 and the subsequent battle with cholera, which had been eradicated for more than 100 years. Stressing the education of oral hygiene is critical in building healthy communities.
Finding credible people and organizations that are genuinely making an impact in the lives of struggling humanity makes me want to give. When I see people who want to make a positive impact on communities, strengthening them, giving them hope, and encouraging sustainable development in health, education, necessary infrastructure – these are things that make me want to give. We can all give something, even if we don’t have a “dollar”. We can give our time, experience and passion to support organizations making a difference. My passion is to connect people that have the tools and resources to help each other build a better world-engineering partnership for success in sustainable development.
Unspoken Similes has worked to promote sustainable development in health and education. Collaborations with Italy and Romania have been recently launched and I am working to expand the program in Bulgaria.

Although i have never been a part of the Unspoken Smiles Program, over the past two years I have witnessed the organizations growth and great success. What truly stands out about Unspoken Smiles is the organizations commitment to improvement. Even though they are already changing the status of oral hygiene in Haiti, it is truly remarkable that they continue to improve their program offerings and the impact they are having rather than remaining stagnant. It is this very fact that has allowed them to truly make a difference in the lives of thousands of children with no access to dental hygiene and care. Truly an admirable organization worth supporting.
It has always been my long life dream to lay helping hands to the less fortunate in life. I am humbly honored to have been chosen to partake in such a great foundation, The Unspoken Smiles Foundation!!!
Unspoken Smiles Foundation is an exceptional organization with a mission to educate and empower children on dental hygiene. Their work is needed around the world. They have accomplished eminent work in Haiti and with representatives in other countries such as Italy, Romania and Haiti, they hope to reach as many children as possible. Putting a smile on the faces of children is priceless as is the work of Unspoken Smiles Foundation.
Unspoken smiles has been doing a great job so far and I wish them success in their future projects as well.
