The Kironde Fund makes an immediate difference in the lives of the poor in Uganda. Donations translate directly into water tanks for rural villagers who otherwise have to trek for miles to get safe, clean drinking water. The tanks save an enormous amount of time and energy for families -- and keep them safer as well, as children are often attacked while carrying water back to their homes, especially at night.
Exceptional charity run by humble and inspirational people who truly care about helping others. The water tank project is a concrete way to improve health, quality of life, and whole communities. By incentivizing families to take in orphans, kids are being given a shot at a future. The families receiving water tanks get a safe water supply, and the children don't have to spend hours walking through dangerous areas to fetch water (not to mention the likelihood that the water they find in the public wells is contaminated). Kids can use the time saved to attend school. The health benefits of a safe water supply also enables the kids to learn better and to attend school more, whereas avoiding water-borne diseases helps parents support their children's schooling longer.
I support Kironde Education and Health Fund because it is run by competent and passionate people, whose project is an impactful and sustainable way to save lives, improve health and generate economic growth. I've been assisting these folks for several years and been to several board meetings. I've seen videos of what they do in Uganda. Children were spending hours every day lugging water from dirty pools to their homes. They made these trips at the risk of rape and attacks by animals or thugs. This non-profit has used the donations they've received to supply homes with large cisterns to hold rain water funneled off of their roofs and thus freed up the children so they can spend more time in school and recreation. They don't just send money to their Ugandan non-profit partner, they travel to Uganda every year to check on progress and learn about other ways to help.
I have been working with this small non-profit for less than a year. I am helping out by offering ideas, attending board meetings, networking to find other people who want to help, and looking for other resources. What I love about KEHF is that it respects and supports the knowledge and wisdom of the villagers (who have their own non-profit---KICHIN). The governing mind-set is to explore possibilities in an effectively systems-thinking view, and then support the implementation of high-leverage interventions (done by the stakeholders through KICHIN) in the right places, that have far-reaching system effects and will tend to last over time.
Past successes have led to excitement and organizational momentum for the villagers and their efforts. If you are in the Boston area and want to help out through volunteering or donating, you could have a significant impact since this is a small non-profit and any help can make a big difference!
The Kironde Education and Health Fund works closely with residents in a small village in Uganda. KEHF provides funding for cisterns (rain water containers) to be installed at many houses within the village. By providing drinking water, children no longer have to the fetch the water at distant water holes and can attend school . The beauty of this fund is that it works directly with the community it serves and takes up projects that the community has recommended. The Fund is managed in Cambridge MA. Kironde Education and Health Fund works with a group in a village in Uganda to provide resources and technical support to help local people meet their needs. The Ugandan group wanted to provide support to families who took in orphans. In the area there was a real need for clean water. The group in the US worked to provide cisterns to families who had taken an orphan and who could provide a base and piping for the cistern. Because families were relieved to the long daily walk to get clean water, children could attend school Families now want to start a cooperative to market their products. Hottspot, Inc, has corresponded closely with co-founder Bill Winder and has come to learn a great deal of KEHF's heart-warming efforts in Kigalama, Uganda. They have already made significant, life-saving contributions to the village through the rainwater cisterns they have given families caring for orphaned and vulnerable children.

The Kironde Education and Health Fund is very deserving of support because they are a small, focused organization with minimal overhead that delivers direct assistance to rural communities in Uganda. This is a phenomenal organization. There is a very special factor that attracted me - it's work is driven by the local people who benefit. They have their own local organization. KEHF works with them to acheive their goals for improving the education and health of families and children. Their organization exists on it own, requires membership and minimal fees. This is in contrast to many other "charities" that helicopter in with well intended "solutions" that cannot be sustained when they leave becasue there isn't suffcient local buy-in and local infracture.
